The roguelike genre impresses with its complexity from the very first moments of its appearance. Many refused to study it as soon as they understood that death is always close behind and levels are constantly generated. The first defeat and the game is quickly forgotten. Nevertheless, this genre has its advantages. For example, clear step-by-step gameplay, which allows enough time for developing a new strategy. So, if a gamer enjoys creating their own strategy instead of mindlessly shooting, they should take a closer look at roguelikes. And the most hardcore of them all is Darkest Dungeon.

Early on in the game, the gamer receives a message from a quirky relative who, after losing his memory, ended his own life with his wealth. The letter states that the gamer is now the heir to his fortune. Upon arriving to claim the inheritance, the gamer finds themselves in a small town that is clearly lacking a master. Naturally, they will begin to restore this grim little town. And here they will encounter many «buts» — the surroundings are filled with monsters, the ancestral castle is completely destroyed, and an invincible evil resides in the ruins. In such a situation, one cannot do without like-minded individuals, and they come in the form of mercenaries who have arrived in the town.

The gamer’s task is to form squads of mercenaries, choosing the necessary equipment for them. Making the right decisions means progressing through the storyline and the victories of the squads are steps towards rebuilding the town. However, one should not be fooled, as the squads can die at any moment. The most gruesome death comes from the claws and teeth of monsters. This indie game is quite harsh to perceive, but it is also what has gained it great popularity. To please the gamer, the developer has created several story expansions, there is even a PvP mode and a tabletop version. Recently, the creator announced the upcoming release of the second part of Darkest Dungeon, so be sure to try the first one in order to be fully prepared for the release of the new installment.
