Black Mermaid Studio and Humble Games have announced Moonscars, a stylish gothic 2D action game in the spirit of Dark Souls. Developed by an indie team from Ukraine and Moldova, the game is set to release on PC in the summer of 2022, with plans for a console release later on.
Moonscars is a dark 2D soulslike game that explores the themes of clay transhumanism and rebellion against one’s creator. Players will take on the role of Grey Irma, a determined protagonist in search of the mad genius known as the Sculptor. Only the Sculptor holds the key to unraveling Irma’s mysterious existence. Along the way, Irma will create numerous clay replicas of herself, each with their own unique abilities. However, only one of these replicas will ultimately reach their goal.
In terms of gameplay, Moonscars is a hardcore slasher with elements of Metroidvania. The focus is primarily on the combat system, with minimal platforming. As Irma explores new locations, she will grow stronger, learn new spells, and collect amulets.
The game’s grim world is inspired by Eastern European medieval aesthetics and the works of Dutch masters such as Rembrandt and Vermeer. Mistakes are not forgiven in Moonscars, as each death of Irma’s replica triggers the Moon Hunger: a cruel deity that thirsts for sacrifices and strengthens the enemies until satisfied.
Moonscars is being developed by a team of three talented individuals: game designer and writer Andrey Moroz from Kiev, Ukraine, programmer Alexander Romanchuk from Chisinau, Moldova, and artist Stefan Semenov, also from Chisinau, Moldova.
Interestingly, the developers have no plans for a Russian translation, but the game will certainly feature the Ukrainian language. While Ukrainian language support is not yet listed on Steam, the developers have assured us that it will be included.
In conclusion, we wish the developers strength and eagerly anticipate the release of Moonscars. Stay tuned for more updates on this intriguing gothic adventure.
