Niantic is a developer specializing in augmented reality games. Its first project, while still part of Google, was Ingress, and its second project was Pokemon Go, which gained immense popularity worldwide. Unfortunately, Niantic was less fortunate with its other games – Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is almost forgotten (by the way, its closure was announced just a few months ago), and Catan: World Explorers went virtually unnoticed – the game never reached a full release.
So, Niantic’s new attempt to “capture the market” of AR games is Peridot, the company’s first original game since Ingress. It will be a simulator of a “virtual pet” – something like “Tamagotchi” but in augmented reality. Peridots (or simply Dots) are the same creatures that come to our world and need our help – that’s how the developer describes the game.
The released screenshots show players walking with “peridots” in the real world, raising them, breeding new species, and so on – for now, Peridot looks very similar to Pokemon Go, so it is interesting to see if they will compete with each other in the future.
Niantic plans to have a limited release in specific markets soon, while interested users can sign up for updates and notifications when the game is launched.
