Civilization III is an excellent version of the franchise, offering an improved gameplay experience and serving as an important stepping stone to later releases. It provides a unique experience that some players may find more appealing than other games in the series. Civ III attempted to update the gameplay known from Civ II. One of the main innovations was the concept of cultural borders and, as a result, the possibility of a cultural victory. Cities create culture, which in turn generates national borders within which other countries cannot engage in construction.
In this game, the player takes command of one of the nations, each of which has different specialized buildings, units, and abilities. The storyline unfolds from ancient times (4000 BC) to the near future. In a turn-based format, the player’s goal is to capture their nation, create a civilization, and win the campaign. This can be achieved through diplomatic, militaristic, or cultural means. The scenario concludes with the construction of a spaceship and its Journey to Alpha Centauri.
