Under the terms of the agreement between the companies, Rockstar will finance the project “in line with typical AAA game production by Remedy.” Furthermore, the studio will rebuild the games on its in-house game engine, the Northlight Engine—the same engine Remedy used for their latest game, Control. Nearly three years after its release in 2019, Control remains one of the most visually stunning games on PC and consoles, thanks to ray tracing technology.
“We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us with the idea of remaking the original Max Payne games,” said Rockstar Games co-founder Sam Houser. “We’re massive fans of the work the Remedy team has done over the years and can’t wait to play the new versions.”
The first Max Payne game was released in 2001 and brought Remedy to prominence, establishing their distinctive storytelling style. The game was also one of the first to feature the bullet-time effect, popularized by The Matrix. Two years later, Remedy released the sequel, The Fall of Max Payne. Rockstar published both games before developing the third and, as of now, the final entry in the series themselves.
