A classic police action game with tactical elements. The series started in 1995 and consists of four games. In each game, players take on the role of a special forces operative and participate in various hostage rescue missions. The tactical gameplay involves planning special operations, forming teams, and selecting equipment. Finances are limited, so players have to be economical. Interestingly, in the second installment of SWAT, players are offered 15 missions as special forces and the same number as terrorists, making it a kind of tactical Counter-Strike.
The first game uses video inserts featuring real actors — a characteristic gameplay element of that time. The tactical field in the second installment resembles the screen of an old-school strategy game, with control buttons and a mini-map on the right panel. The third and fourth parts are more realistic in terms of graphics, with fully utilized three-dimensional environments and high-polygon character models, as well as adaptive AI that acts differently with each replay.
