In Outlast, journalist Miles Upshur is sent to the Mount Massive psychiatric hospital to investigate mysterious events. However, upon arrival, he discovers that the facility’s owner, the Murkoff Corporation, is conducting dangerous and sometimes deadly experiments on the patients. Miles encounters people who appear more dead than alive and soon tries to escape the institution. However, he is stopped by another inmate, who administers anesthesia and locks him in a cell.
The perpetrator introduces himself to Miles as “Father Martin” and explains the reason behind his actions. According to his statement, Miles is destined to put an end to the “Walrider” project. This project involves morphogenic therapy that allows control over a demon-like entity named Walrider. However, it appears that the project is driving patients insane and killing them.
In the Whistleblower DLC, the protagonist becomes Waylon Park, and his story intersects with Miles Upshur’s. Waylon Park must expose the corporation’s criminal activities and put a stop to them.
