Cyberpunk 2077 Mod Turns You into a Real Edgerunner Psychopath

The mod adds a humanity meter that decreases when installing cyberware and committing killings. Play nice or go insane.

In the Cyberpunk universe, you can get too much of a good thing. It might seem like a great idea to give yourself cybernetically enhanced vision, leg implants that allow you to double jump, retractable blades that spring from your arms, and a host of other body-enhancing cyberprograms. But replacing human parts with machines has a downside: a gradual loss of humanity and the possibility of developing cyberpsychosis—a mental disorder characterized by a lack of empathy, impulsive outbursts, and extreme violence.

In the Cyberpunk tabletop game, a player’s humanity is regulated by an empathy stat, which decreases each time a new cyberware implant is installed and can eventually lead to cyberpsychosis, at which point the player character becomes controlled by the GM. Cyberpsychosis is also widely represented in the Netflix anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, as several characters grapple with this affliction.

In Cyberpunk 2077, however, this condition is not extensively explored. The game does feature a number of missions involving the search and neutralization of cyberpsychos operating in Night City, but they mostly boil down to short investigations leading to confrontations with powerful and unhinged enemies. Now, there’s an opportunity to delve a bit deeper into the concept with your own character.

As reported by GamesRadar, prolific Cyberpunk 2077 modder djkovrik has created the Wannabe Edgerunner mod, which allows you to play CD Projekt’s role-playing game with a more in-depth approach to cyberpsychosis. It introduces a new humanity system to the game, making it more reminiscent of TTRPG and Cyberpunk Edgerunners, and the effects of cyberpsychosis will kick in when your humanity score drops too low.

Not only does adding new cyberware to your body lead to a decrease in your humanity score, but committing kills will also lower your humanity level, akin to a morality system. Using certain operating systems will also reduce your humanity score, such as “Berserk,” which, when activated, gives you an attack buff for melee and thrown weapons, and “Sandevistan” (also featured in the anime series), which provides a sword attack buff. In other words, if you plug in a cyberprogram and go on a rampage through the city, killing innocent people with special attacks, you’ll become a cyberpsycho, which you already are.

The side effects of cyberpsychosis start relatively mild: minor visual glitches and a debuff to critical hit chance that can be cured by getting some sleep. However, the symptoms become more severe: stronger visual glitches and another debuff to critical hit chance. When you become a cyberpsycho, you become more powerful thanks to buffs to speed, armor, and health regeneration, but your vision is plagued by glitches, and the cops automatically go after you.

That’s not all bad news. Buying higher-quality cyberware won’t impact your humanity as much as purchasing subpar parts and jamming them into your body. You can also offset the decline in your humanity by injecting neuroblockers, similar to what’s depicted in the anime series. You can purchase these injections from ripperdocs, and using these injections will alleviate the side effects of cyberpsychosis and temporarily freeze the loss of humanity points while the drugs are active.

It appears to be an intriguing system that can be added to Cyberpunk 2077. It will certainly make you think twice when considering how to deal with a bunch of civilians and provide you with some new choices when deciding which cyberware to attach to your body. The Wannabe Edgerunner mod can be found on Nexus Mods.
