Activision Blizzard and Epic Games Cease Game Sales in Russia.
Activision Blizzard has announced the suspension of new game sales in Russia, as stated by the company’s president, Daniel Alegre, in a public letter to employees. This step prevents Russians from making any new transactions with the company, including both purchasing their games and making in-game purchases.
The press release does not specify whether the ban applies to both digital and physical games. However, it emphasizes the company’s and its employees’ contributions to Ukraine and offers resources for employees affected by the war.
“We are doing everything we can to support employees and their families directly impacted by this tragedy,” Alegre stated in the letter. “If you or a colleague need support, please do not hesitate to reach out to your manager or local HR leaders. I also wanted to remind you that our Employee Assistance Program is available to those who need emotional support during this difficult time.”
Shortly after Activision Blizzard’s announcement, Epic Games also declared that it was discontinuing commerce with Russia in its games but noted that it was not restricting Russian players’ access to them. It is still unclear whether this ban from the Fortnite developer includes microtransactions in games.
Activision Blizzard and Epic Games have joined the growing list of technology companies that have ceased business operations in Russia. Microsoft, which announced its plans to acquire Activision Blizzard in January, decided to suspend “new” sales of its products and services in Russia and Belarus. This includes not only Xbox games but also products related to Windows, Office, Microsoft 365, and more.
