Unity’s Game-Changing Apology: Revamps Business Model for Developers

The renowned game engine developer, Unity Technologies, has just flipped the script with groundbreaking announcements affecting both its subscription plans and developer fees. Is this a big deal? Absolutely.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

The highlight of these changes is the abolition of the obligatory “Made with Unity” splash screen for users on the Unity Personal plan. This is an undeniable win for entry-level developers.

Free, Yet Powerful

  • The Unity Personal plan remains free, a significant relief for indie developers.
  • The revenue or investment limit for accessing this plan has been increased to $200,000 for the past 12 months.

What About Those Pesky Fees?

Unity is also cutting some slack here: no fees for games earning less than $1 million over 12 months. And, the Runtime Fee seems to be a thing of the past.

Choice is Yours

If you do fall under the Runtime Fee, Unity offers a choice: either pay 2.5% of your revenue or a variable fee based on new user count. Choice is always golden.

So, do we forgive Unity? Steps in the right direction are always commendable, especially when they favor the developer community.
