This 1998 science fiction online shooter was the debut work of Valve Software. The game became a sensation, repeatedly recognized as the game of the year, and served as a starting point for the creation of other first-person shooters. It was one of the first action games without cutscenes, and the story unfolds solely within the gameplay.
The protagonist, Gordon Freeman, works at the research institute called “Black Mesa” without realizing the nature of the experiments. When a catastrophe occurs, the protagonist tries to escape from the military, who want to eliminate all witnesses, and fights off mutant aliens throughout 19 chapters.
The distinguishing features of Half Life that made it popular are the incredible sense of presence, the presence of allies, and the built-in artificial intelligence of the enemy. Several expansions and official modifications were later released based on the game.
