The Culture War Between Hard Drives and SSDs: Who Will Win?

Sean Rosemarin, the CEO of Pure Storage, has stated that the ongoing cultural war between hard drives and SSDs will soon come to an end. According to him, hard drives will disappear from the market within the next five years, marking the end of the era of magnetic data storage. The main reasons for this outcome are high energy costs, the simultaneous decrease in SSD prices, and the rapid development of AI that demands flash memory.

Currently, nearly one-third of data center energy consumption is dedicated to data storage, and almost all of it is associated with hard drives. If conditions for transitioning to flash memory are created, and NAND prices continue to decrease, reducing energy consumption by 80-90% will become possible. This will leave hard drives with no chances in the market.

As for related games, you might enjoy “Data Center Simulator,” where you manage your own data processing center. Or “Hard Disk vs. SSD: Battle for Storage,” where you take on the role of a computer engineer trying to determine which storage type is more efficient. And, of course, don’t forget about the iconic classic “Deus Ex,” where the use of AI and nano-implantation technologies becomes a decisive factor in the battle for the future.

So, the victory of SSDs over hard drives is already close. How do you view this situation? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
