Amazon is not buying Electronic Arts. But that’s not certain.

Rumors surfaced this morning that Amazon is going to make Electronic Arts an offer it can’t refuse. That is, Jeff Bezos’ company, which has been trying to build its own gaming business for about ten years, is going to buy EA. Later, Bloomberg and CNBC denied this information. EA shares managed to fall, but have already recouped this fall.

On the other hand, there is no smoke without fire. Amazon has indeed been beating its own game business in vain for more than a decade, burning through insane amounts of money. Bloomberg estimates somewhere in the neighborhood of $500 million a year. And so far can boast only MMORPG New World, everything else has turned out either badly or very badly. Neither the hiring of famous game designers, nor the latest engine, nor the advanced network architecture helps. Amazon simply doesn’t know how to develop games.

EA, on the other hand, does, though the company also suffers from poor releases in recent years. Battlefield 2042 was a disaster, GRID Legends was a complete failure (in fact, buying Codemasters in February 2021 was a complete mistake). But Electronic Arts has a lot of good studios that can create hits, and maybe that’s exactly what Amazon needs to finally get their own game business.

On the other hand, is EA going to sell? The failure of two games is a no-brainer compared to the money the FIFA series, Madden NFL and other annual sports releases bring in. What’s more, Electronic Arts bought in pretty well in 2021, acquiring Codemasters, Glu Mobile, Metalhead Software and Playdemic for more than $5 billion.

So, is Amazon going to buy Electronic Arts, or not? Who knows, but then again, there’s no smoke without fire. So let’s take a look at what happens in the coming weeks.

Do you think selling Electronic Arts is good news, or not?
