Postponing The International will cause a lot of problems

Sweden, host of The International 10, is denying access to players. Officials in the country have decided that the event cannot be classified as an elite sporting event. The tournament has been moved to Bucharest and will take place in October.

It would seem that the wait is only three months, but the postponement of The International leads to a number of problems:

  • The new DOTA Pro Circuit format has split the competitive year into two stages, with each stage alternating between the majors. Due to the cancellation of the event in Sweden, regional teams in Tier 2/Tier 3 will have to wait until November for the new season.
  • Teams that fail to qualify for the tournament will have to take four months off (instead of a month and a half).
  • A patch with a new hero could affect teams’ strategy. The release is scheduled for August-September – there will be a little time before The International. It will not be enough time for players to adapt to the changes. The problem would be solved if Valve pushed back the patch release.
  • In September, contracts with top players expire. Most contracts are signed before this month. Rewriting contracts will have to be done shortly before the tournament. Players can begin to dictate their terms.

In October, cyber athletes will fight for a record high prize fund – the size of more than 40 million dollars. Tickets are not yet on sale.
