Wargaming Stands with Ukraine: A Bold Step or a Risky Move?

Recently, Wargaming, the powerhouse behind World of Tanks, rolled out cosmetic packs showing solidarity with Ukraine. The package stars a tank donned in blue and yellow, the national colors of Ukraine. But that’s not where it ends.

Fundraising for Defense

The proceeds from these packs are channeled to a fund, which, among other things, supports the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense. Essentially, the tank enthusiasts are indirectly bolstering the Ukrainian armed forces with their purchases. In Russia, this gesture is perceived differently, veering into the criminal spectrum.

More than Just a Game

Wargaming didn’t just stop at in-game purchases for supporting the cause. They have been contributing to this fund for the last one and a half years, well before these cosmetic items saw the light of day.

Lesta Games: The Bystander?

The waters get murkier with Lesta Games, the distributor of ‘tanks’ in Russia and Belarus post Wargaming’s exit, distancing itself from Wargaming’s Ukraine initiative. However, a closer look at the licensing agreement on Lesta Games’ website revealed Wargaming as the copyright holder of the distributed ‘tanks,’ implying a share in the profits.

  • Upon this discovery, Lesta Games scrubbed the copyright mention from the agreement and initiated a ban-wave on their VK page for inquiries regarding this.
  • Meanwhile, Russia’s State Duma is gearing up to put a barricade on World of Tanks within the nation’s boundaries.

A Flicker in the Blizzard

Interestingly, back in July, Blizzard too had launched pets in World of Warcraft, with sales proceeds promised to Ukraine. The reaction then, however, was more subdued. It raises questions on the varying degrees of response towards similar initiatives by different gaming giants.
